This new (2025) study in Journal of Industrial Ecology authored by Nancy Bocken and Matthew Coffay explores how circular business models emerge in the United States. First, a number of successful business models were identified including: Buy- & Take-back business models, Product service systems like rental and lease, Premium priced models coupled with high service & durability, and companies supporting the transition through environmental assessment and software solutions. Second, a framework of pathways for circular business innovation was introduced. Third, a “Circular Business Institutionalization Framework” is introduced which can guide the future implementation of circular business models as part of wider sustainability transitions.
